This illuminating volume refìects our passionate and continued research on the work of old masters. The Flight from Troy, signed in capitai letters by the artist (clearly aware of his precocious and prodigious talent), is a remarkable early work by Giovanni Lanfranco, which has been further enriched by Erich Schleier's meticulous and detailed study. The painting, which was in a private German collection until 2005, is striking both in terrns of its size and iconography. It is the first large cabinet painting by the artist from Parma to come to light. The equally significant influence of both Agostino and Annibale Carracci on its composition and structure, as well as the recorded provenance from the collection of Count Orazio Scotti, Marchese of Montalbo, makes this work a "perfect circle", encapsulating the beauty and venerable tradition of Italian seventeenth century painting. Establishing the date and provenance of this painting means giving it a new lease of life.
