L'abitazione a Procida partecipa all'esperienza sorta nel Vicino Oriente e lungo le sponde meridionali del Mediterraneo e trasmessa in occidente ed in oriente nei propri contenuti e nelle tecniche esecutive.
Una moltitudine di anonimi esecutori ha operato nell'unità economica, sociale e culturale di quest'ambiente marittimo, in un continuo processo ripetitivo di utilizzo degli elementi costruttivi, interpretati e spesso esaltati dalle singole capacità creative.
Sono realizzati cosi' pure a Procida, nell'attività dell'uomo diretta all'esecuzione della propria casa, gli obiettivi generali ed i valori espressivi coerenti con la difesa attenta dalle condizioni climatiche, definiti dai materiali adoperati e dall'impianto strutturale.
Il processo costruttivo dell'abitazione collettiva, anche in questa isola del golfo di Napoli, avviene nel tempo lungo e nel riproporsi costante dei metodi impiegati. E gli uomini, committenti o esecutori, lo affrontano con criteri estranei all'accaparramento di risorse o a procedimenti speculativi. In questa vicenda l'uomo produce quanto occorre per le proprie esigenze ed il proprio ricovero; non vi è sfruttamento perché è improponibile sottrargli parte del suo lavoro.
Questa condizione consente una stabile situazione di equilibrio dell'ambiente trasformato, una ampia qualità degli spazi e la totale razionalità dei volumi. Cosi' l'abitazione assume nel procedere storico il senso di soluzione dei bisogni reali della vita in comune: definisce i legami interni a ciascuna famiglia, il modo di vivere, la funzionalità come successione dei vari atti connessi all'esistenza quotidiana.
The features and techniques of house-building on Procida originated in the Near East and the southern shores of the Mediterranean, from where they spread both eastwards and westwards. The economic, cultural and social unity of this sea-faring environment was the theatre for countless anonymous builders. It was a continuous, repetitive process of using building elements, which were interpreted and often exalted by individual creative capacities. On Procida, too, in building their own houses, the inhabitants achieved the general objectives and expressive values consonant with careful protection from the climate, which were determined by the materials used and the structure itself. As happened elsewhere, some considerable time elapsed, with a constant repetition of the methods used, before the construction of collective dwellings evolved on this island in the Bay of Naples. The inhabitants, both those who commissioned and those who built, set about tbe task with other criteria than those of appropriating resources or speculating. Each man produced enough to meet his own needs in terms of shelter; there was no exploitation because it was not feasible to appropriate part of a man's work. Such a situation brought about a stable equilibrium of the transformed environment, ample quality of space and total rationality of volume. With the passing of time, the dwelling-place therefore took on the sense of solving the real needs of a shared life: it defines the internal ties in each family, lifestyle and functionality as a succession of the various acts connected with everyday existance.
